Elise Crull is Associate Professor of Philosophy at The City College of New York and the CUNY Graduate Center. She did her undergrad in physics at Calvin University and her PhD in Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, in the History and Philosophy of Science program.
Before coming to NYC she held a Leverhulme Post doctoral Fellowship at the University of Aberdeen (where her office was in a 14th Century tower likely haunted by Hume’s dissatisfied ghost) and an Edelstein Centre Post-doctoral Fellowship at the Hebrew University (where her office was just across the hallway from the Einstein Archives).
Her research, teaching, and daydreaming mostly concern the historical and philosophical foundations of physics.
She was made a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2025, which is cool for a philosopher.
She’s written some books and things, and has given more talks than is altogether healthy. See the Research & Media pages for more.
She regularly teaches courses of the kind she wishes she could have taken as an undergrad, like Philosophy of Science, (History &) Philosophy of Quantum Mechanics, and (History &) Philosophy of Space & Time. You won’t find a Teaching page on this website, because her philosophy teaching philosophy is uncompromisingly anti-digital.
When Crull isn’t thinking about entanglement, odds are good she’s doing something music-related (composing, listening to Rachmaninov’s Symphony #3 on repeat, learning a new instrument, singing with Downtown Voices — a Grammy-nominated choir, she hastens to add), wandering in some glorious natural landscape, riding a teal 1982 Yamaha Virago*, or sampling single-malt whiskey that’s older than she is.
